013. Another Chapel, Le Corbusier, Folklore, and Checkers +
Jeanie's roundup for the week of April 15, 2024.
Today, April 24, 2024, marks the one hundred and ninth anniversary of the 1915 Armenian Genocide.
For over a century, the Ottoman Turks’ massacre of 1.5 million Armenians has thematically dominated Armenian film, art, and music.
In “Krunk” [crane] by 20th-century Armenian composer and priest Komitas, the crane symbolizes one who wanders, dreaming of the day she’ll find and build her home.
After Azerbaijani armed forces bombed the St. Ghazanchetsots Church of Artsakh on October 8, 2020, the first cellist of the Belgian National Philharmonic Orchestra, Sevak Avanseyan, performed the piece in its ruins.
Design
Another chapel—sorry, not sorry!
Chapelle Notre-Dame du Haut
The Chapelle Notre-Dame du Haut of Rondchap, France was designed by Swiss-French architect, designer, and urban planner Le Corbusier (Charles-Édouard Jeanneret).

The window and balcony placement is really sweet. Doesn’t the building look like a kid wearing a silly hat?
You might recognize the Chandigarh chair, a collaboration between Le Corbusier and his cousin, Pierre Jeanneret. It is one of the most famous (and lately, ripped off) chairs of all time.
In 1950, Le Corbusier was tasked with the master planning of Chandigarh, India. He designed several government buildings and with his cousin’s help, fitted student housing with custom furniture.
LC14 Tabouret
Le Corbusier’s LC14 Tabouret was included in the facilities, too.
Inspired by a wooden whiskey box washed ashore, Le Corbusier originally created the piece for his French Riviera cabin of minimalistic, box-shaped furniture.

Last week, the LC14 Tabouret was the star of Bottega Veneta’s Salone installation, ‘On the Rocks.’ The limited edition Hommage à Le Corbusier LC14 Tabouret Cabanon is a cube-shaped version of Le Corbusier’s original featuring Bottega Veneta’s signature Intrecciato woven leather.
Film
Steph wanted background noise, so she played Aladdin. It’s the same Aladdin. I didn’t pay much attention, but I was reminded of a fun fact—Disney modeled Jafar’s appearance after a character in Parvana, an Armenian short film.
Parvana (1970)
Parvana is an animated retelling of an ancient Armenian folktale about the origin of Lake Parvana, now Parvani Lake in Georgia.
Watch it on Kinodaran.
Food
Canh Chua
Canh chua is a Vietnamese soup of tamarind, lemongrass, pineapple, celery, tomato, bean sprouts, okra, and fresh herbs.
I ordered canh chua ca (can chua with fish) at Mai Lee in St. Louis. The sour tamarind, sweet pineapple, and acidic tomato beautifully complemented the mild catfish.
It’s unlike anything I’ve ever tasted. If you see canh chua on a menu, order it (and let me know where). Alternatively, here’s Mai Lee’s recipe.
Miscellaneous Gems
Fritillaria Meleagris
Fritillaria meleagris is a bulbous perennial native to European river flood plains. The Latin fritillus, meaning dice box, references the plant’s long, bell-shaped checkered flowers.

Incredible. Have you seen one before? Where? When? Please, tell me about it.

It does look like a kid wearing a silly hat !!
